Stone Spray-- a 3D Printer for Architecture

A new machine called the Stone Spray uses natural sand or soil to build solid objects and aims to be the starting point for building much larger infrastructure like buildings or even bridges through 3D printing.

According to Gizmag, the Stone Spray works much like your typical 3D printer in that it uses a computer to follow a 3D design and uses a mechanical arm to build objects by layering material.

The device sprays sand or soil that has been mixed with a solidifying agent from a nozzle attached to the arm. Now this is where it has a leg up on regular 3D printers. The Stone Spray doesn't just layer the material upward, it can build in multiple directions, even outwards from vertical surfaces, creating arches and other shapes. After the material has been deposited, it takes several hours for the objects to dry. When finished, they look kind of like coral, but are as solid and strong as concrete.

Right now, the Stone Spray creates objects on a small scale, but the machine proves that this type of digital construction could be done on a larger scale in the near future, illustrated by the image below. Even better, this process utilizes local, natural materials and uses so little energy that it could easily run on solar power therefore making it eco-friendly.

Morning tip

You know the saying: “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”  After sleeping all night, our metabolism and blood sugar are at their lowest; we need a healthy breakfast to re-energize us. Breakfast of champions consists of a protein, a colorful fruit or veggie, and a whole grain. And if you’re a walking zombie without your morning caffeine fix, experts suggests adding a spill of milk or fortified soymilk which spikes your beverage with calcium and protein.

Dustin moskovitz -- It's harder than it looks

Dustin Moskovitz co-founded Facebook with Mark Zuckerberg and it made him a billionaire. Now he's working on another company, Asana.

Moskovitz created a startup deck that's full of advice about how to launch a successful company and explains what it takes to be an entrepreneur. It's not as glamorous as Hollywood and the media make it look.

It's important to know [why you want to start a company]," Moskovitz explained to a Stanford class. "You may have been mislead by the way that Hollywood or the press likes to romanticize entrepreneurship."

"You can't not do it in two ways. One is you're so passionate about it that you have to do it and you're going to do it anyways. This is really important because you'll need that passion to get through all of those hard parts of being an entrepreneur...The other way to interpret this is the world needs you to do it."

Aquatop display - A water touchscreen

USING WATER

The unique characteristics of water is that it allows for both interaction underneath and above the surface. By allowing the user to " immerse " themselves in the water, it is possible to let the users become one with the virtual world realised in the display.

THE IDEA

The idea came from the use of commercialised bath salts that cloud the water. The surface of milky water can then be used as a projection surface. The more cloudy the surface, the more clear the projected images are.

SIMPLE INSTRUMENTS

The Aquatop Display can be recreated with an affordable depth camera (Microsoft Kinect) and a standard projector. Clouding agent can be off-the-shelf bath soaps found in most stores. Feedback found in the game application, seen above, is from a custom-built waterproof speaker system.

Isro's Mars mission successful, India makes history

India created history on Wednesday, becoming the first country to successfully get a spacecraft into the Martian orbit on its maiden attempt.

The scientists had waited for more than 300 days as MOM journeyed on through space, but the last 54 minutes were virtually unbearable. For, it was during this period that the orbiter first reoriented itself and then fired its engine and thrusters for about 24 minutes to get into the Mars orbit.

India is the first country to get this right in the first attempt," Modi said.

As it goes around Mars on an elliptical orbit with the closest point around 420km and the farthest around 80,000km, MOM will employ five equipment that collectively weight 15kg to do scientific studies.
